Wow -- New Civ is 10 years old next month! I went to read the poem, and it seems different than I first read it. Have the words changed? Anyway, maybe Ming-Man can give us an update of the membership to date, and the number of countries, etc?

"We are the New Civilization
We are here.
We are waking up now, out of the past, to dream a bigger dream.
We are friends and equals, we are diverse and unique, and we're united for something bigger than our differences.
We believe in freedom and cooperation, abundance and harmony.
We are a culture emerging, a renaissance of the essence of humanity.
We find our own guidance, and we discern our own truth.
We go in many directions, and yet we refuse to disperse.
We have many names, we speak many languages.
We are local, we are global.
We are in all regions of the world, we're everywhere in the air.
We are universe being aware of itself, we are the wave of evolution.
We are in every child's eyes, we face the unknown with wonder and excitement.
We are messengers from the future, living in the present.
We come from silence, and we speak our truth.
We cannot be quieted, because our voice is within everyone.
We have no enemies, no boundaries can hold us.
We respect the cycles and expressions of nature, because we are nature.
We don't play to win, we play to live and learn.
We act out of inspiration, love and integrity.
We explore, we discover, we feel, and we laugh.
We are building a world that works for everyone.
We endeavor to live our lives to their fullest potential.
We are independent, self-sufficient and responsible.
We relate to each other in peace, with compassion and respect, we unite in community.
We celebrate the wholeness within and around us all.
We dance to the rhythm of creation.
We weave the threads of the new times.
We are the new civilization."

Oh, wow, you're right. It is NCN's 10 year birthday on March 13th. We've better have some kind of happening then.

No, the words haven't changed. But maybe you have. ;-)

Membership count and number of countries, sheesh, I used to proudly report that all the time, but I feel a little silly about doing it now, as, obviously, most of those folks aren't exactly here right now. But at least there's 9458 recorded members totally.

The Friars of Wycombe wore white druidic-style hooded robes with silver badges inscribed with the motto 'Love & Friendship'.

Lady Mary Wortley Montagu

A HYMN TO THE MOON.

Written in July, in an arbour.

Thou silver deity of secret night,

Direct my footsteps through the woodland shade;
Thou conscious witness of unknown delight,
The Lover's guardian, and the Muse's aid!
By thy pale beams I solitary rove,
To thee my tender grief confide;
Serenely sweet you gild the silent grove,
My friend, my goddess, and my guide.

E'en thee, fair queen, from thy amazing height,
The charms of young Endymion drew;
Veil'd with the mantle of concealing night;
With all thy greatness and thy coldness too.

TRANSLATED BY HERSELF:

Della notte serena argentea Diva,
Testimon' fido de' piaceri ignoti:
Custode degli amanti e delle Muse
Fautrice, reggi me ne'boschi oscuri.
Da' toui pallidi rai scorto io camino
Su la terra, ed a te svelo i piu cupi
Pensieri. Ah indora il tacitorno bosco,
Dolcemente serena amica mia,
E mia guida, e mia Dea. Bella reina,
Te dalla tua prodigiosa altezza
Il lusinghiero Endimione attrasse,
Del velo ingombra della notte oscura,
Della tua ampiezza in onta e del tuo gelo.

"The elphin knight sits on yon hill,
Blaw, blaw, blaw, wind blaw.
He blaws his horn both lewd and shril.
The wind hath blown my plaid awa."

The horn is magic and arouses desire in the hearer.

This ballad is a reversal of the oldest version of the Elfin Knight, a tale of supernatural occurrences, in which an elf threatens to abduct a young woman unless she can perform an impossible task; she responds with a list of tasks which he must himself first perform. The familiar plot is closely related to another ballad ("Riddles Wisely Expounded") in which the Devil proposes to carry off a woman unless she can answer a number of riddles.

{link:http://www.newciv.org/nl/newslog.php/_v119/__show_article/_a000119-000091.htm|Does Man deserve to be saved?}

The later versions is a reversal of the original tale. In this version, it is the maid who {link:http://www.newciv.org/nl/newslog.php/_v97/__show_article/_a000097-000026.htm|pines away} for the Elfin knight's favor. He tells her he will marry her if she will perform numerous tasks, all impossible.

"For thou must shape a sark to me,
Without any cut or heme," quoth he.

She promptly responds with her own list of impossible tasks, and thereby wins his favor.

"Ask her to do me this courtesy,
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme,
And ask for a like favour from me,
And then she'll be a true love of mine."

The song is most well known today for being the basis for Simon & Garfunkel's "{link:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scarborough_Fair|Scarborough Fair}."

"If you say that you can't, then I shall reply,
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme,
Oh, Let me know that at least you will try,
Or you'll never be a true love of mine.

Love imposes impossible tasks,
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme,
But none more than any {link:http://www.newciv.org/nl/newslog.php/_v408/__show_article/_a000408-000049.htm|heart} would ask,
I must know you're a true love of mine."

Another tale, "The Witch of Wookie Hollow", has a similar plot. A witch imprisons a girl who was stealing apples from her orchard. She sets her seemingly impossible tasks every day, but a bird tells the girl how they can cleverly be performed. After the girl has completed each task, the bird asks for a kiss and the girl refuses. Finally the bird does not know how to do one of the tasks and he begins to cry. The girl kisses him and he turns back into a boy, previously imprisoned by the witch, and the two escape together.

5 Jun 2007 @ 01:56 by Hanae @69.33.46.10 : Opposite Meditation
"Everything in this world has its opposite" and "if we don’t know our own opposite then we will meet much opposition in this life": these are the two core postulates of opposite philosophy.

"Doing opposite meditation in this day and age is a precious antidote to the daunting one-sideness we meet every way we turn."
--- {link:http://music.lulu.com/content/839666|A Complete Manual of Opposite Philosophy by Patrick McGowan}

The Manual was originally written for day long workshops on opposite meditation where the associated ideas were introduced with examples drawn from tai chi exercise.

Without being an unconditional subscriber per se to the so called core postulates, I find the meditation itself a valuable exercise in terms of semantics. This deceptively simple exercise sometimes help refresh the meaning (or bring new perception) of things which sometimes become stale out of being overused. On occasions, it reveal possible blind sides or help raise new questions.

Anyway, this is what it would look like on NCN.

"We are not the New Civilization
We are not here.
We are not waking up now, out of the past, to dream a bigger dream.
We are neither friends nor equals, we are not diverse and unique, and we're disunited for some things pettier than our common potential.
We do not believe in freedom and cooperation, nor in abundance and harmony.
We are not a culture emerging, nor a renaissance of the essence of humanity.
We can't find our own guidance, and we don't discern our own truth.
We go in very few directions, and yet find it easy to disperse.
We don't have so many names, we speak few languages.
We are neither local, nor global.
We are not in all regions of the world, we're very thin in the air.
We are not universe being aware of itself, we are not the wave of evolution.
We are not in every child's eyes, we do not face the unknown with wonder and excitement.
We are not messengers from the future, nor are we even living in the present.
We do not come from silence, and we do not speak our truth.
We can be quieted, our voice is only that of a few ones.
We have enemies, boundaries can hold us.
We don't respect the cycles and expressions of nature, we are not nature.
We play to win, we don't play to live and learn.
We do not act out of inspiration, or love or integrity.
We don't explore, we don't discover, we don't feel, and we don't laugh.
We are not building a world that works for everyone.
We do not endeavor to live our lives to their fullest potential.
We are not independent, nor self-sufficient or responsible.
We do not relate to each other in peace, with compassion and respect, we don't unite in community.
We don't celebrate the wholeness within and around us all.
We do not dance to the rhythm of creation.
We do not weave the threads of the new times.
We are not the new civilization."

Try it on for size. Try it on you. Try it on NCN? How does it fit? How does it not fit?

(Those are all rhetorical questions, btw. Questions one asks of oneself along with any other questions - or some totally different questions instead - that might happen to pop up as a result of the exercise. It varies from one individual to another. It is a meditation, so this is for oneself alone, not for others.)

I guess my uneasiness with the prstentaeion is that if that is the point, then it wasn't much of a point. The "modern consumer good" is a product of the very specific economic and technological conditions for a specific model of mass-production and marketing at the current time. There's nothing inherently pertinent about that sort of product, other than its mass availability. What it illustrates is that modern products require technology and an economics of scale that would be cost prohibitive at a personal scale. We all have lots of groovy toys we wouldn't have if not for modern technology. This is news?I just think he went overboard in trying to exactly replicate the cheap toaster. For instance, instead of asking himself, "Gee, what could we make the body of this thing out of?" or, "Does this thing really need to be designed with a body like this?" he tried to make his own plastic to mimic the $6 one he bought. That's just silly. There are a lot of ways to toast a piece of bread: even if you grant that it should use electricity and be spring loaded, and pop up when done, there would be a lot of ways to skin that cat.In the end, they all would toast a piece of bread. Obviously, it makes a lot more sense to buy the mass-produced one rather than try to make your own from scratch. Mine appears to be mostly metal, BTW, and to have fewer parts. I was talked into buying it after Katrina, and right now I'd rather have the 10 bucks. That, of course is the point he didn't make: do we really need all of this cheap mass-produced consumer stuff?

Geez, you don't have to go that far. Try to make a hammer or screw dvierr from scratch. (For that matter, a nail or a screw!) Or try a bicycle. Good luck with those metal tubes and bearings.Don't have time to watch the video right now. Did he try to make an electric toaster? Did he try to make the electricity from scratch too? As some of the comments at the video point out, it's pretty easy to make toast from bread if you use some wire and a fire. Of course, where'd you get the bread and the wire?
